Articulation

The Articulation is the first point of call in my arsenal of research for my Major Project. This page will offer introductions into each aspect of research and performance undertaken. It will also provide you with links to pages which explore notions comprehensively, which combats the performative and theoretical understanding.

Research and Development

This article will detail the research and development phase of my Major Project. Updates will be made throughout on the development via research and creating. Videos and articulations will be posted on this page and it will be of note that each phase will have links to access research, rehearsal footage and developmental tools that have helped me along my journey.

I have chosen to document my Major Project this way as it offers a reflection of the research methodology I am using which is the nature of 'Tentacular Thinking' (Haraway, 2016: 30). This method coined by Donna Haraway demonstrates the links and interconnections research can grant.

Overall, this page will be the gateway into each purposed Chapter to help navigate the tentacular nature of my process and progression.

The Beginning

The Beginning of any project always proposes trepidation particular within the creative sector. The nature of creating with a stimulus is something which I find particularly helpful, but with the amorphous nature of Contemporary Practice beginning from scratch and compressing a performance is a challenge.

Lucky for you I love a challenge!

This video is a brief introduction to the start of my project giving details on what is to be expected from this process. It has also been shared to various social media accounts to allow both a following from social media and this site. This is to allow interest from both the academic and wider community to follow me in my process and journey.

The Methodology

Creating material for any project can be difficult but the nature of my practice and the development for this project relies heavily on research and the translation of the research into the physical space.

I found that using Performative Responses (Interview Threads/ Call and Response) is an excellent place to start. This allowed me to continue to develop material based on what I have been received but also look back and explore previous material in further detail.

The example on the right is a response taken from the Performer as Maker module in which I wrote a poem about the nature of the Contemporary. Grace Newman (A fellow student) then redacted words from the poem and created her own response using my poem as a stimulus and developmental method to create something new.

The quality of the call and response is something to be noted as the interstitial space of practices and finding the moments of beginning and ending is something which I find particularly of interest.

Chapter One

Dividing my performance into Chapters allows a chronological structure to each section of research and allows me to promote an understanding of the performative element which underpins the research.

Paradoxically the first chapter is composed of the research undertaken by Jacques Derrida and their ideologies of 'Deconstruction' (2006). The reading and research promoted a reflection on the linguistic analysis of Derrida and how this is promoted in Performance Practice. In particular, how can we deconstruct an auto-didactic practice?

During the Masters Degree I have been able to define my plural practice into two words. Scholar and Weaver. The scholar as I am someone who is fascinated by research and has a strong curiosity to understand more. A weaver as someone who creates and tells stories.

Defining my practice has also promoted a fascination with the imbrication of String. Similar to the connotations of Practice-as-Research being an imbrication, I find myself often using string as a visual aid and tool to allow understanding of my Tentacular Thinking.

Exploring Deconstruction I have alluded to the ideas of metaphysics. Combining these two theoretical approaches together has allowed me to not only deconstruct an individuals performative practice, but also consider the deconstruction of the fundamentals of what is known as the 'Meta'.

As my process is an ongoing investigation which will constantly shift with research. This has been a starting point for my creation of performance.
