An autobiographical script created for 'The Bruntwood Prize for Playwrighting' in Partnership with the Royal Exchange.
Based on my own experiences 'He Drinks' investigates the drinking culture for University Students and the line between alcoholism and social life.
The culture of British #University students revolve around social drinking. 'Freshers' is an indoctrination into university life by overindulging and binge drinking. The expectation of a night out is pre-drinking and going from sober to as drunk as possible without spending money is the doxa for the majority.
“Put it in a pint glass and I'll drink it.”
But what happens when the #drinking becomes dangerous. When the socialising can't happen without any alcoholic substance. Connor begins his second year of University with so much promise, a new house, new job, new boyfriend. When the line is blurred between social drinking and #addiction how can one maintain?
An Interwoven Narrative
He drinks is a narrative of Connor at university, whilst simultaneously showing his life in the future attending meetings and working on recovery. It is an investigation into his downward spiral and his progression.
